About the Author:

Major Bruce H. Norton, USMC (Ret.) is an award-winning author of more than a dozen nonfiction books on the American military, including One Tough Marine and Force Recon Diary, 1970. With over twenty-four years of military service and a master's degree in military sciences, Major Norton has served as a military museum director, a military history professor, Marine Corps historian, and senior editor for Behind the Lines: The Military Journal of US Special Operations. Serving as Tactical Officer at The Citadel: The Military College of South Carolina, Major Norton lives on James Island.

This volume includes almost 400 entries featuring men and women who fought and, in most cases, died during military service to the U.S. Many of the individuals profiled were awarded one or more citations for their heroic achievements, for example, the Medal of Honor, the Navy Cross, the Distinguished Service Cross, the Silver Star, and the Bronze Star. An introduction, which describes the criteria the editor used for selecting entrants, is followed by a section explaining the different citations. Coverage is extensive, going back to 1675 and extending to the present.

The entries are arranged alphabetically by the individual's last name and include rank, branch of service, and the circumstances resulting in citations. All branches of the military (the U.S. Army, Navy, Marines, and Air Force) are included, as well as Native Americans and Confederate soldiers. Most of the entries are a few paragraphs in length. Some of the records consist solely of a verbatim quoting of the actual citation. Each entry concludes with a section citing source material and additional reading. A few entries are accompanied by photographs.

The encyclopedia winds up with an appendix of American war statistics, a bibliography of print and online sources, and a general index. An index providing access to entrants by war or battle would have been useful for students. Still, this encyclopedia would be a valuable addition for public, high-school, and academic libraries, as there is nothing else quite so extensive. RBB
