The Romantics valued nature, spontaneity, visionary experience, powerful feeling, and the artist's individual response to the experience of life. Encyclopedia of Literary Romanticism provides a comprehensive A-to-Z guide to the Romantic movement, including such great writers as William Wordsworth, John Keats, and Mary Shelley. Entries in this new resource cover poets and novelists, literary works, historical and cultural topics, and more, ranging from the 18th-century precursors of the Romantics, such as Thomas Gray, to the six poets traditionally regarded as the chief Romantics, to mid-19th-century Victorians often regarded as late Romantics, such as Elizabeth Barrett Browning.

From Booklist:

This addition to the Facts On File Literary Movements series covers a period in British history from 1789 through 1832. Editor Maunder is a lecturer in the UK and the author of other works relating to British literature. His introduction provides a detailed explanation of what Romanticism is and what it encompasses. Writers included in this resource are the major (Mary Shelley, William Wordsworth) and minor (Leigh Hunt, Isabella Lickbarrow) Romantic poets and prose writers as well as some precursors (for example, Thomas Gray) and inheritors (Elizabeth Barrett Browning). The hundreds of entries offer detailed information about poets and novelists, literary works, and historical and cultural topics such as Cockney School, Gothic, and Luddites. Entries range from several paragraphs to several pages in length, and each ends with a short bibliography of further reading. The encyclopedia also has a chronology chart covering events from 1775 through 1834. A bibliography of secondary resources and a detailed index complete the work, which is an excellent beginning resource for the British-literature student and is recommended for high-school, college, and public libraries. Also available as an e-book. --Carol Sue Harless
