Nearly 5,000 chronological, day-by-day entries allow students to follow events as they unfold, often in day-by-day detail. Each event is preceded with a standard topical marker to help readers quickly locate the subjects they want to follow. About the Author:

JOHN C. FREDRIKSEN, Ph.D., an independent scholar and researcher, has compiled four military history bibliographies, including Shield of Republic/Sword of Empire: A Bibliography of U.S. Military Affairs, 1783-1846 (Greenwood, 1990) and Free Trade and Sailors' Rights: A Bibliography of the War of 1812 (Greenwood, 1985), and has edited 20 War of 1812 diary and letter collections. He holds a doctorate in American history from Providence College.

From Booklist:

In these volumes, author Fredriksen has accomplished a noteworthy achievement in compiling both the high and low points in the history of America’s military establishment. Each volume encompasses a particular era of American military history, with the Civil War and World War II serving as breaking points and ending at the close of 2009. Under each date, individual entries are given a particular thematic heading such as “Military” (army, militia), “Naval,” “Marines,” “Aviation,” “Diplomacy,” and “Technology,” an arrangement that aides in ease of use. Individual entries range in length from a few sentences for minor occurrences to whole paragraphs on monumental events, such as the surrender of Yorktown by the British (October 19, 1781); the firing on Fort Sumter (April 12, 1861); and the launch of Operation Desert Storm (January 17, 1991). More than 40 capsule biographies, which are scattered throughout the volumes, spotlight significant figures, including Little Crow, Oliver Hazard Perry, John J. Pershing, and David H. Petraeus. More than 150 black-and-white images add to the presentation. Each volume concludes with a diverse set of cogent black-and-white maps as well as a categorically arranged bibliography of pertinent sources. Only volume 3 contains an index. Those familiar with Fredriksen’s Chronology of American History (2008), identical in style, will find this set an excellent companion work. These rich volumes are recommended as a valuable supplement to any American history collection, from public to academic and special collections. Also available as an e-book. --Brian Odom
