Synopsis

All too often, vocabulary building is accomplished through rote memorization. A more effective approach is through the study of the Latin word roots on which thousands of English words are based. This new vocabulary text offers such an approach for high school students. Patterned after the popular text English Words From Latin and Greek Elements by Donald Ayers—published by the University of Arizona Press in 1966 and used widely in colleges, universities, and many high schools—Words Under Construction offers a course in word study tailored to the abilities of younger readers. Not only does it show students how to analyze words for the meanings of their prefixes, roots, and suffixes, it also reinforces its instruction through the use of context sentences drawn from media and literature with which high school students are familiar. A wide variety of exercises is included.
