This comprehensive survey of Gramsci's political theory, which spans the whole range of his writings, provides an ideal introduction and lucid guide to his complex and often obscure texts. Centred on his theory of the state, the book argues that events like the Russian revolution and the political and economical reorganization of capitalism in the 1920s and 1930s led Gramsci to produce original and innovative concepts. The author offers a new analysis of hegemony as a primarily political concept and suggests that Gramsci's point of departure was an analysis of the modern interventionist state and the new relationship among state, economy, and society that has developed in the twentieth century.
