Grade 3-5 Simply but not badly told, these biographies present information in an unintimidating formatlarge print, full-color illustrations and brief text. Abraham Lincoln is the most convincingly and warmly portrayed. There is a vivid recreation of his rugged and often unhappy boyhood and youth. Lincoln the man is less warm and human here than the boy Abe, but there is a clear indication of his progress into history, his pain for suffering humanity and his dignity and eloquence. Christopher Columbus tells the sad, familiar story of his famous voyage and his failure to find a route to the East. His colorful tale is vividly told and illustrated with a vigor that will appeal to action-minded young readers. George Washington has a more monumental, less human quality, which is partly explained by the cool colors and somewhat formal style of illustration. The difficulties of even touching upon the scope of his activities in such an abbreviated format has left little room in which his character could be fleshed out. He seems remoteOlympian.
