A kitten does not like it when his mother goes away without him, but after enjoying some time by himself, he understands why she does it.

PreSchool-K-Herbert's Mom is a feline with joie de vivre! She likes to go out, leaving her kitten with some relative or other. As she flits out the door to the beauty parlor, the dress shop, or a vacation, she calls gaily over her shoulder to her downcast son, "Back soon!" One day Herbert decides to turn the tables. He tries going under the table, and up to his room, but his busy mother seems scarcely to notice his absence. Then one morning he heads for the garden, announcing, "Back soon!" He has such as fine time that he forgets to return in a timely fashion, whereupon his mother comes looking for him and they have a grand, affectionate reunion. Thompson's energetic cartoons are laced with witty details. Herbert's mother is depicted as a fashion-forward ditz with a weakness for chic millinery, a watch on her tail, and a purse shaped like a fish. The message is meant to be amusingly reassuring: both parents and children need time to pursue their own interests; they are all the better for it when they are reunited-with the assurance that the separations are temporary. However, there are some false notes here. No "Woman of the '90s," Herbert's mother seems a frivolous anachronism. In a world where many mothers have little time to themselves and no choice at all about being separated from their children to make a living, this all seems a bit trivializing and less comforting than intended. Cheerful and well intentioned, but not essential.
