Introduces a variety of rain forest animals while counting from one up to ten and then back down to one again

PreSchool-Grade 3. A book that can be enjoyed on several levels. Young listeners can practice counting skills by noting the number of tropical rain forest animals or plants on each page. Older children can refer to the notes at the end to learn more about basilisk lizards, erolytus beetles, agoutis, and other creatures. McCourt's rhymes sometimes make an uncomfortable mouthful of syllables for reading aloud, but Nathan's striking illustrations more than compensate for bumps in the text. The rich colors and layered textures bring the rain forest world to life for those who need an introduction to some of its wonders. A problem lies in the relative size of animals. For example, the two agoutis are as large as the jaguar stalking them on the preceding page, but the appendix notes that they are the size of large rabbits. However, in a counting book, the need to use available space while making items to count clearly visible probably justifies some accommodations. An enjoyable numerical introduction to unusual plants and animals far from home.?Kathy Piehl, Mankato State University, MN
