Ages 3-6. Oscar is a leopard who can change his spots--with some help from a local magician's lotion. But the magic shampoo is supposed to be rubbed in sparingly, and that's not at all the way Oscar uses it. At first, Oscar's spotless fur looks fantastic, but then the extra shampoo kicks in, giving him stripes, then plaid, then stars, and finally, flowers on his fur. It takes some magic paint to replace the spots, but at least Oscar has learned to settle for the way he is (with one little star left over to add panache). Nothing terribly special here, but the text is lively enough, and Robertson's pen-and-watercolor art is cheery and full of fun. Even the simple message about being yourself should appeal to young listeners. Ilene Cooper
