9780819128164: For Marx Against Althusser

Introducing a new cross-disciplinary genre co-published with The Center for Advanced Research in Phenomenology, this volume argues that any attempt to break into the intertextuality of Marx's philosophy, economics, history, and sociology, or to separate him from Hegel and the classical economists, merely results in crude reductions of Marx's achievement.

About the Author:

John O'Neill is Professor of Sociology at York University in Canada. A prolific author, his books include Perception, Expression and History, Sociology as a Skin Trade, Making Sense Together, and Essaying Montaigne. He is also editor of the International Library of Phenomenology and the Social Sciences and co-editor of Philosophy of the Social Sciences.

Review:

O'Neill emerges as a careful interpreter who honors the integrity of Marx's work) what he calls the intertextuality of philosophy, economics, sociology and history) thus rescuing it from (structuralist and other) reductionist tendencies dominant in recent decades. (Fred R. Dallmayr, Packey J. Dee Professor Emeritus, University of Notre Dame)
