About the Author:

John S. Monagan practiced law in Waterbury, Connecticut and in Washington for twenty-two years, served five years as Mayor of Waterbury, and seven terms as a member of Congress from the Fifth District of Connecticut.

Review:

A balanced appraisal of the human side of the legendary Holmes, written with charm and grace that can be enjoyed by any mature, sophisticated reader. Careful documentation and good index. For general readers, graduate students, and faculty.>>>> (Choice)

This book is a gem. It is little...it sparkles; and it is valuable. Oddly, despite all the books and articles that have been written about Justice Holmes, this book fills a gap.>>>> (New York State Bar Journal)

...a compact but impressively researched book....>>>> (The Washington Times)

...a delight. It is not, as one might expect, an exercise in nostalgia, but a witty, perceptive, and learned portrait of an eminent Victorian who also happened to be a great judge, a great stylist, and a great man. The book is rich in anecdote, much ofit collected through interviews with Holmes' surviving law clerks. Moreover, the author has discovered that Holmes and an Irish noblewoman had a prolonged amitiÈ amoureuse which he delineates with insight and feeling.>>> (Eugene V. Rostow The Washington Times)

The Grand Panjandrum not only provides a closer look at one of the towering figures of American legal thought but also lends valuable insight into the personal qualities that can influence the judicial decision-making process.>>>> (Texas Bar Journal)
