The Period of the Gruesome is the most extensive collection of stories written by the extraordinary 19th century journalist Lafcadio Hearn while he was a newspaper reporter in Cincinnati. It includes the only bibliography of Hearn's Cincinnati writings. The 54 stories presented in this study were selected from the 439 contributions Hearn made to three publications (The Cincinnati Enquirer, Ye Giglampz, and The Cincinnati Commercial) between November 1872 and April 1878. Presented chronologically, these stories were chosen for their uniqueness both in content and style.

Review:

...Hearn has his admirers not just in the United States but around the world, and they will be both pleased by and fascinated with this volume, which contains some pieces never reprinted before.>>>> (American Literature)

Hughes has done a fine job of selecting intriguing pieces and compiling them in a lucid order. The book is not light reading, but its gripping tales are sure to shock you.>>>> (Clifton Magazine)

Apart from their obvious importance to students of Hearn, these shocking and sometimes horrifying sketches and reports that were first printed in two quite respectable Cincinnati newspapers between 1872 and 1877 will make some of us revise our notionsof nineteenth-century readership in America.>>> (Nineteenth-Century Literature)
