The author, a historian who has written extensively on 19th- and 20th-century America, recounts the events of the first year following Lee's surrender. Using the formula he successfully employed in such previous books as Vicksburg: 47 Days of Siege ( LJ 11/15/69) and Thunder at Hampton Roads ( LJ 12/15/76)--that is, interspersing brief narration with lengthy excerpts from contemporary diaries and letters--he depicts Lincoln's assassination, the trial and hanging of the conspirators, the building of the Union Pacific Railway, and the first attempts at reconstructing the South's ravaged cities. A worthy addition to history collections in both public and academic libraries.
