The tragic encounter of the Bemba, a people of central Africa, and Europeans during the colonial era is seen in this book as a clash between two fundamentally different images of man. Understanding the myths and symbols which express these images is shown to illuminate and deepen our understanding of political history, and a structural relation between the history of religions and political science is established. Rather than at the aesthetic level of artistic creation, the most important function of «creative hermeneutics» lies at the ethical-political level of modern man's quest for peace.

About the Author:

Kees W. Bolle is a professor emeritus of history from UCLA. Along with several translations, his books include "The Persistence of Religion: An Essay on Tantrism" "and" "Sri Aurobindo"'"s Philosophy "and" The Freedom of Man in Myth." He is editor for the University of Pennsylvania's Studies in the History of Religion series.

Review:

«Lane's book is an interesting document about the changing relationships between the rich nations and the developing world. ... (H)e works from the rightful assumption that the most fruitful way to understand a people's most profound concerns is to delve into their myths and rituals, not merely as an academic, but as a human being as well. Secondly, ... he reminds us that the worldview of the development agencies is as mythical as that of the people they intend to help. Remembering this may make them perhaps more modest with regard to planning and more compassionate in their judgements.» (Matthew Schoffeleers, Journal of Religion in Africa)
