A World in a Grain of Sand is a collection of twenty-two interviews with Northrop Frye from the early 1960s through the 1980s. Frye responds to a wide range of questions about the media, education, religion, literary theory, language, music, and literature itself - from Plato and the Bible to Milton, Blake, Shelley, and Melville. Half of the interviews, transcribed from tape recordings, are published here for the first time. Throughout the collection the reader will discover a richly stored mind, often expressing itself in an ironic mode, arguing for the value of both the liberal tradition and the visionary imagination. What emerges finally from the interviews is Frye's own broad vision of the social function of words.

About the Author:

The Editor: Robert D. Denham is Fishwick Professor of English at Roanoke College, Salem, Virginia. He taught previously at Emory & Henry College, and from 1986 to 1988 he was Director of English Programs for the Modern Language Association. He is the author of Northrop Frye and Critical Method (1978), Northrop Frye: An Annotated Bibliography (1987), and the editor of Northrop Frye on Culture and Literature (1978), Myth and Metaphor: Selected Essays by Northrop Frye, 1974-1988, and the Northrop Frye Newsletter. A graduate of Davidson College, he received his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Chicago.

Review:

«...the whole collection of interviews is pervaded by Frye's concern with imagination, vision, and myth, and it soon becomes obvious how deeply his interests in religion and Romanticism interwine.» (M.M., The Romantic Movement)
