This «guide and commentary» offers an elucidation of all the difficult passages of Mallarmé's Divagations, his influential main body of critical writing. It provides the information essential to an understanding of each article and of his critical project as a whole. The running commentary deals extensively with the relationship between Divagations and the other major writings of Mallarmé, particularly the Coup de Dés, his crowning creation which is his closest approach to his lifelong dream and project of a Great Work.

Review:
«'Mallarmé's Divagations: A Guide and Commentary' constitutes the most thorough study to date of this group of difficult texts by the nineteenth-century poet who has most profoundly influenced modern critical thought and aesthetics. Professor Cohn, who has devoted his life to Stéphane Mallarmé's work, gives us a brilliant commentary and an ideal guide indeed.» (Ursula Franklin, Grand Valley State University)
«...any student of Mallarmé, from undergraduate to postbac, who uses a Cohn critical volume such as this one, thanks the lucky stars for their beneficent guidance. More seasoned scholars,... will learn from and recognize that 'Mallarmé's Divagations: A Guide and Commentary' fits comfortably within the 'Grand oeuvre' that is Robert Greer Cohn's masterful lifework.» (Katherine C. Kurk, Nineteenth-Century French Studies)
«...Cohn presents his material with admirable clarity and much that relates to the literary issues of our own time.» (Dorothy M. Betz, French Review)
