9780820424811: Traditions of Igbo Origin (American University Studies)

This fascinating study represents the first major historical analysis of the traditions of Igbo Origin. John Oriji uses evidence derived from oral traditions, archival records, works of various researchers and other sources to provide a rare insight into the roots of the diverse population movements that have taken place in Igboland over time. He also uses the Igbo example to contribute to the debate on the Bantu migrations and the genesis of mankind, agriculture and iron technology in the West African sub-region.

Review:

«...by undertaking the ambitious and arduous task of unravelling the complex traditions of one of Africa's major sub-national groups in a major book...Dr. Orijihas made an invaluable contribution to African history and African Studies. Scholarly and readable, this book will, no doubt, continue the controversy and debate.» (G.N. Uzoigwe, Imo State University, Nigeria)
«This work opens significant new vistas for African history, allowing the Africanist scholar and the layman to assess the role of heroic myth in the creation of a distinct worldview and cultural ethos. Moreover, 'Traditions of Igbo Origin' provides a fascinating glimpse into the earliest episodes in the historical evolution and self-definition of an African people.» (Quintard Taylor, California Polytechnic State University)
«...a ground-breaking synthesis of traditions (the author) has helped collect and a valuable contribution to the multi-disciplinary approach to the subject matter.» (Henry J. Antkiewicz, East Tennessee State University)

«The search for traditions of origin, like the search for genealogical roots, has always been a fascinating subject. Igbo historians have long been bogged down with the problem of tracing Igbo origins. But by undertaking, and largely triumphing, the ambitious and arduous task of unravelling the complex traditions of one of Africa's major sub-national groups in a major book - an undertaking that has scared off many a historian, Dr. Oriji has made an invaluable contribution to African history and African Studies. Scholarly and readable, this book will, no doubt, continue the controversy and debate.» (U.N. Uzoigwe, Imo State University)
