How can campus life become more hospitable to the human spirit? This book invites everyone concerned with the quality and meaning of campus life to engage in new conversations about the spiritual and religious dimensions of diversity, leadership, student development, and learning. This book challenges conventions in higher education that neglect religious identity and spiritual exploration while perpetuating disconnection, competition, and separation from our natural and social environments. It offers innovative approaches for positive change, while addressing the complex legal, organizational, and cultural issues involved in this conversation. Grounded in original research and professional practice, this collection includes reflections from college presidents, campus leaders, student affairs staff members, and faculty.

Review:

«Higher education is witnessing the emergence of more integrative forms of working, living, and learning that have the potential to transform universities and colleges. This book comes at the right time, offering insightful reflections on religious diversity and spiritual exploration in multiple dimensions of campus life. It is a valuable source of analysis and ideas for anyone interested in a more integrative future for higher education and, ultimately, a wiser world.» (David K. Scott, Chancellor, University of Massachusetts Amherst)
«‘Transforming Campus Life: Reflections on Spirituality and Religious Pluralism’ is a long-awaited and much-needed compilation of essays discussing the new and difficult terrain of religious diversity, spiritual expression, and multifaith gatherings occurring on our college and university campuses today. With candor and clarity, ‘Transforming Campus Life’ delves into the complexities that emerge when profoundly different communities of faith seek to understand one another, dialogue with one another, and even share in interfaith worship. Because we are breaking new ground as we learn to meet the divergent and sometimes contradictory needs of different faith communities, case studies and successful models are needed as maps to guide our journey. ‘Transforming Campus Life’ offers the theoretical underpinnings of our work as well as stories and concrete examples to support and strengthen our efforts.» (Andrea Ayvazian, Dean of Religious Life, Mt. Holyoke College)
«In ‘Transforming Campus Life: Reflections on Spirituality and Religious Pluralism’, Vachel W. Miller and Merle M. Ryan have produced an edited volume of stories related to spirituality on college campuses that covers a wide assortment of topics, programs, and types of institutions. Readers will appreciate the variety in tone and topic of the chapters, which range from the very personal to the conceptual and theoretical. This is an important resource for anyone struggling with the complexity of addressing the spiritual needs of college students, and is especially useful for student affairs courses or professional development seminars on the topic of college students and their experiences.» (Patrick Love, Associate Professor, Higher Education Program, New York University)
