9780820486246: The Revival of Buddhist Monasticism in Medieval China (American University Studies)

This is the first book in any language offering a comprehensive study that places Daoxuan (596-667), one of the most important scholarly monks, in the context of medieval Chinese Buddhist history. In presenting a fresh image of medieval monastic life of Chinese Buddhism, it focuses on several key issues in Daoxuan’s work, including the veneration of Buddha’s relics, the re-creation of the ordination platform and ordination ritual, and how the Buddhist community reclassified and dealt with monastic property. It is indispensable for all those who are interested in the religions and history of medieval China and comparative monasticism.

From the Back Cover:

Huaiyu Chen's The Revival of Buddhist Monasticism is a major study on the early Tang scholar-monk Daoxuan (596-667). In view of the importance of this great medieval Chinese Buddhist leader, the time for such a study is long overdue. The author delivers substantially on his promise to provide a history of the institution of the celibate monkhood in China. In so doing, he illuminates the reform of the ordination system of early Tang Buddhism, the role of relics in Asian history, and the place of property (both private and communal) in Buddhist monasticism. This is scholarship of the highest order, and it contributes significantly to our understanding of the sociopolitical history of Buddhism in China.

Victor H. Mair, University of Pennsylvania

About the Author:

The Author: Huaiyu Chen is Assistant Professor in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of the West, California. He received his Ph.D. in East Asian religions from Princeton University. Chen has published widely on religions in medieval China in journals.
