Juxtaposing modern photographs of scenes depicted by Cezanne, Pissarro, Monet, Renoir, Van Gogh, Sisely, and Boudin with reproductions of the paintings themselves, this creative art/travel melange provides maps and other information on taking day trips from Paris to visit these locales. The idea is striking, but the results are not always satisfying. The photographs are more detailed than the reproductions and show up with greater clarity, but closer inspection reveals the paintings to be better; the artist's eye is hard to copy. This labor of love--the author is herself a painter--will please both the armchair traveler and more adventurous souls who want to follow in her footsteps. The book can be read cover to cover or used as a reference for such specific locations as Argenteuil, Rouen, and Le Havre. Not essential, but appealing for fans of Impressionism and for Francophiles.
