Chloe is clumsy, so clumsy that society has assigned her the sobriquet Miss Bumblebroth. Although only 21, she has chosen to live in seclusion since her disastrous debut three years ago. She has turned her attention to managing her investments and painting in oils, rather than the more usual watercolors favored by civilized young women. Lord Michael Lyndon, extremely athletic and sports-minded, is bidden by his father to marry Chloe. He initially rebels, but upon meeting the young lady he is captivated by her charm and the sense that another personality lies hidden behind the drab gowns and untidy coiffure of her public facade. Kingsley's Regency romance is written with humor and compassion for a woman of spirit and intelligence and a man of honor, both forced by circumstance to marry, and who learn to look beyond outward appearances and make the best of an arranged marriage.
