While cleaning the attic of Wildings Hall, the estate she inherited from her great uncle, Evelina Wesley discovers a map that seems to be the key to a long-lost smuggler's treasure. Even though Evelina no longer has the need for money she once had, she can't resist the idea of how much fun it would be to search for the smuggler's ill-gotten booty. The only difficulty is that the treasure seems to be buried somewhere on Blacklands, the neighboring estate owned by the earl of Rotherstone. Convincing the cranky, unsociable, and much too handsome earl to let her and her friends tromp all over his estate won't be easy, especially since he has developed quite a reputation for his willingness to snub his neighbors. Evelina is determined to try, though, and after spending more time in his company, Evelina begins to suspect that perhaps she, and everyone else, just might be wrong about Rotherstone. With its excellent characterization and a lovely sense of wit, King's latest Regency is a splendid treat. John Charles
