Kate McGillacutty, a 17-year-old spoiled heiress, has traveled to Virginia City with her mother in 1864 because her father gave them an ultimatum--leave Chicago or have their funds cut off. A very wealthy self-made man, he wants his daughter to marry someone who knows how to work. Thinking she is stymieing his plan, she agrees to marry but only if she can pick the groom. Finding drunken Peter O'Rourke in a gutter, she strikes a deal with him to enter into a sham marriage. Peter, an actor abandoned by his troupe, likes the idea of managing McGillacutty's lumber camp and fails to inform anyone that he is really the son of an Irish earl. He then proves to be an able and compassionate manager who earns the respect of his employees by performing their dangerous jobs. When a wildfire burns the camp, Peter's secrets are revealed. This debut romance will appeal to readers who like Old West settings. Diana Tixier Herald
