Grade 6 Up-- A welcome revision of the 1973 title that will enlighten and surprise most readers. Clark's sensitive synopsis of Indian-white history begins with Tecumseh's attempts to form a united Native front to white expansion in 1812 and works its way west through the 19th century. She does a good job of interweaving well-known battles with corresponding activities in the government. Important concepts and entities are all smoothly integrated into the recent history of America's most unknown minority. The second half of the book concentrates on the 20th century by again briefly but clearly describing major events of the period such as fishing rights, treaty issues, and the occupations of Alcatraz and Wounded Knee while highlighting parallel activities and individuals in the government and in "Indian country." The concluding chapter is a whirlwind tour of some Native Americans who have become well-known in the larger culture in the areas of government, sports, literature, music, art, and even the military. Black-and-white photographs and reproductions are scattered throughout. However, the cover photograph of a smiling child does not reflect the content of the book. The index catches all of the major people and incidents, but there is no bibliography, which is a shame given the interest the book should stir. One of the freshest and fairest summaries of recent Indian-white history available, masterfully done. --Lisa Mitten, Univ . of Pittsburgh, PA
