Grade 4-6-- Each of the 23 Super Bowl championships, through the 1989 game, are capsulized in four to six pages of text consisting mainly of descriptions of game action and second-hand quotes from players and coaches. Regular season highlights and playoff results of the two participating teams are also briefly described. An introductory page tells how the Super Bowl originated. The only appendix is a chronological listing of the scores from the past championships. Black-and-white photographs, mostly action shots, of various size accompany each chapter. While the writing is straightforward and readable, factual errors are too numerous to ignore. Incorrect teams, scores, and players are found repeatedly in the accounts. For example, in describing the Oakland vs. Philadelphia game of 1981, it is stated that Oakland beat San Francisco 34-27 in the playoffs. They actually beat San Diego in this game. San Francisco is in the NFC and Oakland is in the AFC, making it impossible for them to be playoff opponents until the Super Bowl. Hopefully an accurate account of the Super Bowl games will be published to update Nathan Aaseng's Football's Super Bowl Champions I-VIII and Football's Super Bowl Champions IX-XVI (both Lerner, 1982). --Tom S.
