From School Library Journal:

Grade 4-6-- Another series imported from England and nicely re-packaged for the American market. The format in all six titles is the same: double-page spreads serve as chapters, and each has two or more color photos, drawings, or diagrams showing examples from around the world. The illustrations are well annotated and the diagrams clearly labeled. Type is clear and readable--words defined in the glossary appear in the text in bold type. Because these are topic oriented, and children are not expected to read the entire series, there is some repetition of general information. Curiously, words defined in one glossary and used in another book are not always re-defined in the second book. Castles and Mansions includes more information on the defensive origins of castles than on their use as dwellings (Unstead's See Inside a Castle Watts, 1986 is far superior in that respect) and how they later evolved into manor houses which gave way to palaces and mansions. Homes in Cold Places and . . . Hot Places discuss both traditional adaptations such as Inuit igloos, Lapp and Bedouin tents, and modern adaptations such as heating and cooling systems using solar energy. Homes on Water includes boats and ships as well as houses on stilts or pilings, shorefront dwellings, and even underwater habitats and submarines. Building Homes concentrates on modern single-family constructions of the type found in Europe and North America and other "developed countries," but also includes some general history of housing, construction of high-rises (including non-home buildings), and a variety of other traditional building techniques including adobe, mud, and clay. Mobile Homes repeats some of the information on boats and includes tents, trailers, wagons, and habitats in space. Although this series does not break any new ground (many anthropology books cover the traditional, primitive dwellings, and many titles in the architecture section will have similar material on skyscrapers or even small, modern frame houses), it is an attractive, serviceable series which will be useful for assignments and perhaps even attract a few browsers. --Rosanne Cerny, Queens Borough Public Library, NY
