Grade 4-6-- A fresh, up-to-date series in a visually appealing and textually informative package. There is a good balance of text, photographs, maps, and effective diagrams throughout. Their length and layout will also make these titles sought-after resources when the standard state reports are assigned. A short trivia section will capture readers' interest initially, leading into coverage of geography, history, life/work patterns, and environmental concerns. Special sections include the standard facts-at-a-glance, brief biographical information about famous people, a circle graph that visualizes types of work in the state, and a pronunciation guide. These books are more appealing and useful than Dennis Fradin's "In Words and Pictures" series, in which it is difficult to access the information. The "America the Beautiful" series (both Childrens) is written with much more detail for a more sophisticated audience.
