Mary Church Terrell grew up after the Civil War with many opportunities. Although she received an excellent education and had a distinguished teaching career, Mary grew up African American in a segregated country. There were opportunities she did not have. Always determined, she joined the fight for equal rights. By lecturing, picketing, and writing she made her voice be heard and helped to end segregation.

ELLEN BEIER has illustrated numerous books for children, including Sybil Ludington's Midnight Ride by Marshal Amstel and The Promise Quilt by Candice F. Ransom. She lives in Corvallis, Oregon. From School Library Journal:
Grade 3-6-A serviceable, easy-to-read biography of the African-American civil-rights activist and feminist who was, in many ways, far ahead of her time. Swain recounts her subject's young years as the daughter of freed slaves just after the Civil War. Terrell's parents were successful in business, and even though they divorced, they supported their daughter's desire for an education. Although she led a long and productive life, Terrell is perhaps best known for her fight to end discrimination in Washington, DC, restaurants, buses, hotels, etc. in the 1950s. The abbreviated format does not allow for a lot of background material and the author glosses over many details. A smattering of pedestrian-quality pencil illustrations does little to enhance the text. There is little available about this admirable woman for young people, but she is certainly worthy of a fuller, more thoughtful treatment.
