A history of immigration through the port of New York, with special focus on the processing at Ellis Island

From School Library Journal:

Grade 5-8 A book that gives far broader coverage than its title implies. The focus is on the common experiences of all steerage class immigrants as they passed originally through Castle Garden and later through the Ellis Island facility. Fisher relates the experiences of the immigrants in a straightforward manner, but his choice of illustrative incidents often shows the callousness with which these people were treated. Included is a graphic description of the required eye check during which unsanitary buttonhook tools were used to lift eyelids to check for trachoma. Quotations from oral histories also demonstrate how many of the immigrants had negative feelings about their treatment during the immigration process. The black-and-white reproductions and Fisher's scratchboard drawings are excellent and enhance understanding of the clear, descriptive text. This is one of the few books for this age level that describes the immigration process without focusing on one particular nationality group. There is so much information in the photographs and the text that this is a perfect book for those who have little or no general background on this subject. Fisher's latest work deserves consideration in all libraries serving middle graders. Janet E. Gelfand, Lawrence Junior High School, N.Y.

From Publishers Weekly:

Fisher takes readers on a majestic journey, the "largest movement of human beings in history." Through his evocative writing, we, along with the immigrants, "fall silent with excitement and expectation." He covers the area's history from colonial times until today, including stories and remarks by individuals who went through the immigration process there: the first immigrant to arrive on the island (Annie Moore, Ireland, 1892); the fire that destroyed all records from 1855 through 1897; the painful eye exam; the heartbreak of being sent back. Well-chosen National Park Service photos of varied ethnic groups, in combination with Fisher's dark scratchboard drawings, effectively convey emotion, making this a wonderful companion to The Statue of Liberty.
