Grade 1-4-- The story of museums from ancient times to the present day in an inviting picture-book format. The first collections of treasures, readers learn, were not meant for public viewing but instead were special caches for the royal families to admire. However, after the French Revolution the public demanded that private collections be made available to everyone. Weil goes on to describe the various kinds of museums, how collections are obtained, museum personnel, as well as the commonplace sites: cafeterias, restrooms, and lost and founds. The book ends with cursory descriptions of different kinds of museums and a list of the "most famous museums in the world." While most of the history of museums is discussed, curiously, Weil fails to mention the Ashmolean at Oxford University in England, the first public museum opened in 1683. Her familiar cartoonlike illustrations are the usual black and white, with orange highlights. The text is readable and fits comfortably with the drawings. However, her style and the monochrome illustrations fail to capture the vitality of these important institutions. This is a useful book as a general introduction, but for books to spark interest in museums try Gail Gibbons' Dinosaurs, Dragonflies and Diamonds (Four Winds, 1988) or Laurene Krasny Brown's Visiting the Art Museum (Dutton, 1986) .
