Grade 5-7-This turn-of-the-century adventure offers few surprises, not much action, and requires a great deal of credulity on readers' part. Sixteen-year-old Tabitha Fortune disguises herself as a boy to get a summer job scouting dinosaur sites for a visiting paleontologist. She can ride a horse and shoot a rifle better than any boy in town and knows the Badlands better than anyone, but her preacher father believes women should lead quiet lives serving their husbands and God. He also considers evolutionary research and science in general to be the work of the devil. Even with the aid of the crusty old woman who runs the post office and the surprising support of her mother, Tabitha is able to effect her deception and achieve her desires too easily. Libraries wanting more books with strong-willed heroines will be better served by titles in Joan Lowery Nixon's "Ellis Island" series (Dell).

Gr. 6^-9. Set in the late nineteenth century just as skeletal remains of dinosaurs are being discovered in the western part of the U.S., Ghost Horses is a fascinating, fictionalized look at many of the social and scientific issues of that period in our nation's history. Tabitha Fortune is a 16-year-old rebelling against her preacher-father's God-fearing perspective of science in general and women in particular. Determined to take part in an expedition digging for dinosaur remains near her hometown in the Badlands, she defies her father, perfecting her already adequate equestrian and rifle skills, and disguises herself as a young man. She bristles when she finds that she has signed on with a scientist who espouses the same views of women as her father, but she so longs to be a part of the dig that she holds her tongue. This multilayered first novel is fast paced and intriguing, one that will quickly become an easy, word-of-mouth sell, though it will probably require an initial push from a librarian or teacher.
