Ms. Auch has written seven popular novels for Holiday House, including "A Sudden Change of Family and Kidnapping Kevin Kowalski". She majored in art at Skidmore College and was an illustrator for "Penny-whistle Press. She lives with her husband, Herm, and their two children on a farm near Rochester, New York. From School Library Journal:
Kindergarten-Grade 3?Poulette, the ballerina hen from Peeping Beauty (Holiday, 1993), returns in another delightful tale. This time, a conceited peacock named Percival brags that he can sing and dance better than any of the hens in the barnyard. Poulette challenges him to a talent contest and convinces four reluctant friends to join her in a ballet of her own creation: "Hen Lake." The others try to learn to dance gracefully, but lack Poulette's confidence and experience. On the night of the contest a sudden thunderstorm provides surprise inspiration and the Hen Maidens perform spectacularly. Auch tells the story with lively humor that never turns into outright silliness. Poulette is an engaging heroine, kindhearted and polite, but willing to stand up for herself and her friends. The gentle moral, that "if you believe in yourselves, you can do anything," comes through nicely. Auch's own illustrations add to the charm of the story, giving each of the five dancing hens, as well as the smirking peacock, real personality. The scene in which the chickens don their homemade tutus is particularly amusing. A fine choice for the picturebook shelves.?Steven Engelfried, West Linn Public Library, OR
