Alexandra Wallner has written and illustrated many biographies for children about remarkable women, such as "Grandma Moses", "Abigail Adams", and "Beatrix Potter". She is inspired by Lucy Maud Montgomery, who always believed in her writing and never gave up. She and her husband live in Mexico.Review:
One of the first song-rhymes many children hear and learn is "The Farmer in the Dell." This artful pen-and-ink with water color rendition by Alexandra Wallner is brimful of ingenious and inventive touches that make the verse spring to life. Her pictures open with a rural scene in which we notice, at some distance, a farmer all dressed up in this Sunday best, about to climb upon a flower-decorated, horse-drawn buggy. The story of his marriage, the arrival of a child, the acquisition of a nurse, etc. unfolds with a beautiful logic and charm. We get drawn into the illustrator's improvisations on the simple text's words and can only marvel at how much she has made of so modest a narrative. The melody is provided at book's end for possible piano accompaniment. A lovely performance for youngest listeners and lookers. Recommended -- From Parents' Choice®
