9780823429431: The Mayflower

The three-thousand-mile trip was crowded and dangerous, and there was trouble when the passengers settled in Plymouth for a bitter, cold winter. However, their determination was ultimately rewarded; the Pilgrims adjusted to the New England climate thanks to help from local Native Americans and soon celebrated their first harvest in the New World.

About the Author:

Mark is an author with a passion for Australian history. He has written many books including: The Legend of Moondyne Joe, The Legend of Lasseter's Reef, Fortuyn's Ghost, Simpson and his Donkey, Ned Kelly and the Green Sash, The Greatest Liar on Earth - A True Story and his most recent books Jandamarra and Midnight - the story of a light horse. Mark's enthralling books aim to encourage an appreciation of Australia's unique myths and legends

Born and raised in New Jersey, Frané Lessac won Australia's Muriel Barwell Award for Distinguished Service to Children's Literature.

From School Library Journal:

K-Gr 2—In the fall of 1620, 102 Puritans began their journey from England to the New World, where they hoped to find freedom from religious persecution. Greenwood's well-researched and concise introduction to the Mayflower provides historical significance in a kid-friendly tone. Lessac's gouache illustrations complement the text while providing students with a visual framework of what pilgrims wore and what life aboard the Mayflower was like. Readers will also find detailed and extensive back matter here. Ideal for those seeking a read-aloud to introduce lower-elementary students to the origins of Thanksgiving. Those looking for texts with the depth of information needed for upper-elementary level research projects should turn to Ann McGovern's classic, ...If You Sailed on the Mayflower in 1620 (Scholastic, 1969) or Peter Cook's You Wouldn't Want to Sail on the Mayflower! (Children's Press, 2005).—Lauren M. Sinacore, George M. Davis Elementary School, New Rochelle, NY
