Gr 4-7-An informative and panoramic view of jazz tap from its roots in West African traditional dance to its contemporary expression. A variety of African dances are introduced and explained, including the challenge dance and the Buzzard Lope. In simple, easy-to-understand language, the book follows the development of this dance form throughout the `20s, `30s and `40s in night clubs, on Broadway, and on the movie screen. Johnson touches on its revival in the late `70s, as well as on the success of the Broadway hit Bring in `da Noise, Bring in `da Funk, a celebration of tap in America.
