Gr 6 Up-A basic career guide with good descriptions of the duties and characteristics that make a successful head, assistant, specialty, and volunteer coach. Information on becoming an athletic director, personal trainer, recreation worker, or physical education teacher may broaden students' career horizons. Chapters discuss education and skills needed; drawbacks and rewards of the position; and the knowledge, attitude, and experiences that make a successful coach. The chapter on preparing for an interview, gaining experience by volunteering, and searching for a job is loaded with great advice. One- to two-page interviews with professionals are valuable and interesting, and the differences in duties of a high school coach versus college or professional are well explained. However, the salary figures regarding high school coaches are confusing. One page states that they may earn a stipend of "$2000-3000" a year if they are also earning a teacher's salary. The next page says that an experienced high school coach may earn "$40,000-50,000 per year." Color photographs depict athletes involved in a variety of sports, though males are shown three times as often as females. A paucity of career books about coaching for this age group makes this a title worth considering.
