Reviews

Grade 5-8-Spencer's very superficial examination of the Kennedy assassination opens with an overview of the events of November 22, 1963. The author then provides some minimal background about her subject's childhood, marriage and family, political career, and presidency. She also describes Lee Harvey Oswald's rather strange life, Kennedy's funeral, and Oswald's murder at the hands of Jack Ruby before discussing the official investigations and conspiracy theories that still surround the event. Sidebars, time lines, and average-quality photos supplement the text. Although there is always a demand for this topic, this book is too brief and limited in background information and details about the assassination and its aftermath to offer any significant analysis. The brevity also leads to oversimplification that will leave many readers confused. Additionally, the text often reads more like a tabloid (" the photo of that moment was seared into public consciousness") than serious writing. Direct readers and researchers to titles such as David Pietrusza's John F. Kennedy (Lucent, 1997; o.p.) or Rebecca C. Jones's The President Has Been Shot!: True Stories of the Attacks on Ten U.S. Presidents (Dutton, 1996) instead.
