Until very recently, these relationships have generally been antagonistic, hostile, and cold at best; Christian church policy was more often than not based on the assumption that Jews no longer had a right to exist as a separate autonomous religious community. Hence Jews were almost always subjected to both formal and informal pressures aimed at forcing them to convert to Christianity - in addition to the periods when they were subjected to active persecution and massacres. As a result, Jews have generally perceived any 'pressure to convert' as a not very subtle form of anti-Semitism and of persecution, and have responded to it by defending themselves against this perceived attack as best they can in their current circumstances. It has only been since WW2 in the USA that Jews have been able to use the full panoply of legal measures to defend themselves against the various sorts of individual and institutionalized anti-Semitism that still exist in America."
