John C. Haughey confronts the alienation and lack of fulfillment that exists in epidemic proportions in the workplace. He delves into the question of the lasting value of work, and focuses on the relationship between work and justice, work and grace, and work and spirit.

In true Ignatian style, Haughey urges readers to examine reflectively the meaning work holds in their own lives, making implicit issues explicit and reaching for a more faithful vocation. Yet despite his stated personal approach, this remains highly abstract, with little in the way of concrete guidance. True, he touches on some fascinating ideas (e.g., relating Walter Wink's analysis of "principalities and powers" to our contemporary stress on "economism" in the workplace). But like Joe Holland's Creative Communion ( LJ 5/1/89), this remains more for theologians of work than for workers themselves.
