John Sanford opens a new door to the Gospel of John and discovers a treasure-house of psychological wisdom. The Fourth Gospel is the most mystic of all the gospels. And Mystical Christianity sheds light on its myriad meanings. It is a book that John Sanford was meant to write. From Library Journal:
In an attempt to identify marks of Jungian thought in the fourth gospel, this book ends up doing justice to neither Jung nor John. "A psychological commentary" is a misnomer; more accurately, the text uses successive Johannine pericopes (extracts) as touch points for psychological reflection, at times bordering on free association. Sanford, a Jungian analyst, may believe that "to be in Christ is to be related to our psychic center" and that "being born again... is at the heart of every process of individuation," but it is doubtful that the writer of John shared these opinions. The many citations of early Christian writers attest to Sanford's knowledge of the emerging church (though he calls the Ante-Nicene Fathers "psychologist-theologians"). But his Greek is rather dated and wooden and his affinity for the J.B. Phillips version of the Bible is curious. A more limited scope would have improved this book, but as it is, there is nothing mystical, nor much Christianity, to it.
