This engaging and informative introduction to the life and work of Samuel Ruiz, who has been bishop of Chiapas in southern Mexico for more than three decades, is at the same time an excellent introduction to the Chiapas uprising that will help readers in the U.S. better understand the roots and direction of the struggle of the indigenous people of Mexico. Ruiz's transformation in the past three decades is an important window on the transformation of the Roman Catholic Church--particularly its opening to theologies of liberation in the post^-Vatican II era and the reaction of the Vatican to the democratization precipitated by that opening. Perhaps even more important, Ruiz exemplifies the possibility of listening to indigenous voices that are still very much alive on this continent in spite of centuries of oppression. If the transformation of the church in Chiapas is any indication, the social-cultural-political movement that is bubbling out of Chiapas through Mexico and beyond is among the most important and hopeful in the history of this continent.
