Book Description Herder & Herder May 2000, 2000. Paper Back. Book Condition: New. One of the most significant historical studies of the theology of grace. First published in 1965, it develops and refines de Lubac's thesis first put forth in Surnaturel (1946) that called into question the idea of 'pure nature.' De Lubac examines the relationship between nature and grace as formulated by Augustine and Aquinas but later distorted by their interpreters (e.g. Cajetan and Suarez) who not only distinguished nature and grace but separated them, leading to the sixteenth-century dispute in which the teaching of Jansenius was condemned. De Lubac shows how grace (super-nature) came to be considered a mere addition or second storey placed on top of nature, rather than a single reality directed towards a single supernatural end. The central issue at stake is whether the Christian, in addition to his or her supernatural end, also has a natural end, or a single, supernatural goal. The implications are manifold and enormous.
