Synopsis

In The Eagle’s Wake: Interpreting the Gospel of John from Origen to Eckhart is an important new volume, intended for the general reader who is interested in the study of the Bible, both in its history and current application. While it makes use of the work of many specialized academic studies, it is not meant for just professional readers. It is also not merely a short introduction to the topic, or an “encyclopedia-style” overview. Rather, each chapter presents the essential core of the Johannnine views of the greatest exegetes of the Patristic and Mediaeval periods. Readers are provided an overall view of what the interpreters had in mind, as well as selected examples of how their readings work out in detail.
