Samuel H. Elbert, professor emeritus of Pacific languages and linguistics, has been the resident authority on Polynesian languages at the University of Hawaii for over forty years. He is a world authority on Polynesian languages and has authored numerous textbooks and dictionaries. With Mary Kawena Pukui, he compiled the Hawaiian Dictionary, the definitive reference work on the Hawaiian language.
The late Mary Kawena Pukui devoted her life to the study and preservation of Hawaiian language and culture. During her career at the Bishop Museum, she inspired dozens of scholars and artists with her interpretations of Hawaiian culture. Besides translating numerous Hawaiian legends, chants, and archival materials into English, she wrote and coauthored many articles and books.
Without question, this is the definitive grammar of the Hawaiian language. Indeed it is the first attempt at a comprehensive treatment of the subject since W.D. Alexander published his concise (fifty-nine page) Short Synopsis of the Most Essential Points in Hawaiian Grammar in 1864. This grammar is intended as a companion piece to the Hawaiian Dictionary, by the same authors.
The grammar was written with every student of the Hawaiian language in mind--from the casual interested layperson to the professional linguist and grammarian. Although it was obviously impossible to avoid technical terms, their use was kept to a minimum, and a glossary is included for those who need its help. Each point of grammar is illustrated with examples, many from Hawaiian language literature.
