Alfie, a baby crow raised by Mr. Orlowski and his dog Sir Lancelot, believes he is a dog too, until one day he sees himself reflected in a pond

Kindergarten-Grade 2-- Alfie, a crow who thinks he's a dog, barks, eats dog food, and even sports a tag, just like Mr. Orlowski's canine, Sir Lancelot. Alfie especially enjoys helping Sir Lancelot chase crows out of the cornfield, until he discovers that he is himself a crow. Crushed by this revelation, the bird exiles himself to a nearby tree until he can regain a sense of self-worth. This story is original, if predictable, and marred by a stilted, occasionally didactic dialogue. Black silhouettes contrast dramatically against a pastel watercolor background, appealingly framed by patterned borders. Unfortunately, the pictures outshine the words. --Ruth Smith, formerly at Chicago Pub . Lib .
