About the Author
Lois A. Cheney, Ph.D. is a professor emeritus at Bowling Green State University. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Dr. Cheney has led numerous religious and educational retreats and has conducted communications workshops for business professionals. She attended Muskingum College and received her master's and doctoral degrees from Kent State University and Michigan State University, respectively. An active member of the Presbyterian Women of America, she lives in Ohio with her feline muse, Kate.

Introduction
A daily period of time is set aside for an individual to concentrate on spiritual contact with his God, and that time is called a time of meditation, a devotional time, or simply devotions. How peculiar to call a planned patter of Bible reading, a prompted prayer, or the casual reading of someone else's thoughts, an act of devotion.
It is the premise of the thrusts on the following pages that devotion to God--the act of being devoted to Godness--is an act of communication. As when we communicate openly with anyone whom we love, there can be no set, static format. Exploring first one idea then another; following each urge to reflection wherever prayerful contemplation, Bible perusal, and life observation lead, they are attempts at honest encounters with God. This search began and continues in faith; faith in the all-powerful and all-loving God.
To search for the life meaning of a loving God asks much: it requires an attempt to feel, to touch, and to taste the love that is promised to those who engage in an honest reaching out to God through Christ. Thrusting from the mind and heart as a seed emerges from the ground into life, it does not try to provide tidy answers. It is just there, providing a continuing experience with Christ. It will nag throughout the days, into the nights, and cut cleanly into the heart. Such has been the experience of the searchers for God throughout the ages. In our present time, when decay of meaning seeps into every life, the God who both humbled and responded to Job waits for us.
These should not be read through quickly. If they are, they will prove a disappointment. They should be pulled into yourself, argued over, thought about, prayed about, elaborated upon, diminished, or discarded--all as part of your personal search for the God who loves, the God who is no fool.
They are frequently written in the first person; it seems that almost all direct communication is.
