"Vision Loss in Older Adults is a comprehensive, well-written and informative volume, edited and authored by leading scholars and clinicians in the field, which addresses common and serious visual problems in later life. The book describes the signs, symptoms, pathophysiology, prevention and treatment of the four leading causes of vision loss (macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy). Going beyond the disease focus, however, Vision Loss in Older Adults thoughtfully describes the psychosocial consequences of age-related vision loss, for affected older adults and their family members---an area in which nurses can play a critical role. In addition, there is a very practical chapter on assistive devices and resources that is of use both for those faced with loss of vision and the nurses who care for them. As a member of America's fast growing "aging cohort" who suffers from glaucoma and who recently endured a scleral buckle procedure for a detached retina, I welcome, both professionally and personally, this important new resource for nurses who will likely one day care for me, as well as many other older adults."
