From the Publisher:

"Finally someone had the vision and tenacity to write a thorough history of the nurses who care for older adults. Dr. Priscilla Ebersole, a nurse author, scholar and leader, has been a champion of "gerontic" nursing as a mechanism to emphasize holistic care. Priscilla, always the raconteur, has steadily reminded us that as a gerontic nurse life is a journey and we are continuously developing along the way. Along with her coauthor Dr. Theris A. Touhy, current and future generations of gerontic nurses now have their legacy codified in a book which leaves out no detail, from an insider's knowledge of the personal relationships in the field, to the grand federal initiatives that have been implemented over our history."

Graham J. McDougall Jr., PhD, APRN, BC, FAAN, Professor of Nursing and Chair Departmental Review Committee, The University of Texas at Austin School of Nursing

"Drs. Ebersole and Touhy bring the specialty of geriatric nursing to life with their reflections on and insights into the growth of a nursing specialty from origins in the 1940s to glimpses of what is to be in the 21st century. Who better to compile histories and narratives about the specialty than Dr. Priscilla Ebersole? She has seen it all and experienced the excitement of "becoming" geriatric nursing from one of the driver's seats. The text provides an interesting and representative review of the progress, maturation, and mandate for the future of the specialty."

Shirley S. Travis, PhD, APRN, FAAN, Dean College of Nursing and Health Science, George Mason University

"If you have a passion for gerontological nursing but think that its history might be boring, you must read the book Geriatric Nursing: Growth of a Specialty. The primary author, Priscilla Ebersole, often writes in the first person. She was there, she was a part of the growth and development of gerontological nursing. She literally brings history to life in her writing. The second author, Theris Touhy, participated in the growth of the specialty and clearly is inspired by it and inspires the reader in turn. This book is lively, fascinating, a page turner for those of us who live and breathe gerontological nursing. I recommend it to scholars, students, practitioners and anyone else who wishes to learn from the experience of the leaders of this important specialty."

Ruth Tappen, EdD, RN, FAAN, Eminent Scholar & Professor Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing, Florida Atlantic University

"Holiday packages come in many varieties, and this year I received a special treat in the form of a pre-publication copy of Geriatric Nursing: Growth of a Specialty by Priscilla Ebersole, RN, PhD, FAAN and Theris A. Touhy, ND, APRN, BC. From Teresa Christy, one of my professors and a noted historiographer, I came to appreciate the need to learn from and to honor our nursing history. This gem of a book is a delightful way to do both, and will be required reading in my geriatric nursing courses as well as an appropriate gift for graduates and colleagues in the field.

"Geriatric Nursing: Growth Of A Specialty is well-written, engaging, thought-provoking and comprehensive, spanning topics from geriatric nursing organizations and educational programs to research and recruitment, and highlighting current issues in the field in the context of their historical development.

"In reading this carefully documented book, one appreciates that geriatric nursing is rooted in a rich history thanks to the remarkable contributions of nurse pioneers like Doris Schwartz, Virginia Stone, and Mary Opal Wolanin who are no longer with us, and the enduring legacy and ongoing impact of "living legends" like Mary Starke Harper and Laurie Gunter. This book instills both a sense of pride and of hope for geriatric nursing: we are building upon a great tradition, AND the future is in caring and capable hands. One final thought: read the Forward. It is a moving and well deserved tribute to the first author, Dr. Ebersole, herself a remarkable geriatric nursing leader."

Kathleen (Kitty) Buckwalter, PhD, RN, FAAN, Professor, University of Iowa College of Nursing, and Director, Iowa Hartford Center of Nursing Excellence
