Synopsis

This report is a doctoral dissertation with slight alterations. Major parts of the contents have been published in summary form by Dawson and Judge (1969), Judge (1970), and Judge and Dawson (1972). It consists of a site survey of PaleoIndian sites in an area about eighty-five miles long and thirty-five miles wide roughly centering around Albuquerque, New Mexico. Fifty-nine sites, including thirty-three campsites, twenty-six sites of limited or specialized activities, and no kill sites were located. The majority of sites were found near extinct Pleistocene playas or ponds, near drainages of various sizes, or near springs. All sites are surface sites exposed by eolian deflation. Artifacts found on repeated visits were collected with counts per site ranging from 13 to 230 specimens plus uncounted waste flakes. Arti- fact types include projectile points, pre- forms, scrapers, knives, drills, gravers, spoke- shaves, and utilized flakes.
