From Booklist:

The four-volume Encyclopedia of World Literature in the 20th Century, published between 1982 and 1984 by Frederick Ungar, contained more than 1,700 entries, most of them biographies. Volume 5 updates this set with biographies of poets, dramatists, and novelists from many nations. Some of these writers have come to international prominence only recently (August Wilson, Salman Rushdie), but others are well-known writers (John le Carr{‚}e, N. Scott Momaday) who, for one reason or another, were left out of the earlier volumes. In addition, there are 35 national-survey articles, ranging from Algerian to Vietnamese literature, and six new topical articles on such recent literary trends as deconstruction, feminist criticism, and postmodernism. Every entry concludes with a bibliography, and there are black-and-white portraits of some authors. The cumulative index covers all five volumes. Subject headings for nationalities appear, so it is possible to find, for instance, all the Japanese writers in the set.

Libraries that have found the Encyclopedia of World Literature in the 20th Century useful will want to add volume 5, especially for its coverage of non-Western authors who are difficult to find elsewhere. Sandy Whiteley

From Library Journal:

This volume supplements and updates the second edition of the Encyclopedia , published in 1984. International in scope, Volume 5 offers over 400 biocritical essays on contemporary authors. While the basic four-volume set favored American, British, and European authors, the individual author essays in Volume 5 include more selections from Asian, African, and Latin American writers. In addition, over 35 national survey articles update the basic set. Topical essays on literary critical theories such as feminist criticism and on movements such as poststructuralism are included, and concise bibliographies follow each entry. There is one drawback: Though an index to the entire five-volume set offers cross references to author essays, national survey articles, and topical essays, it lacks cross references to the hundreds of titles discussed within the individual essays. Highly recommended for libraries owning the four-volume set; libraries that do not subscribe to Gale's "Contemporary Authors" series may want to consider purchasing the entire five-volume set (
